Set in a drought-ridden rural town in the West in Depression era America, the play tells the story of a pivotal hot summer day in the life of spinsterish Lizzie Curry. She has just returned from a trip to visit pseudo-cousins (all male), which was undertaken with the failed expectation that she would find a husband. As their farm languishes under the devastating drought, Lizzie's family worries about her marriage prospects more than about their dying cattle. A charming confidence trickster named Starbuck arrives and promises to bring rain in exchange for $100. His arrival sets off a series of events which enable Lizzie to see herself in a new light.

The house staff, a maid named Jane Twisden and a swineherd named Nicodemus Underwood, have their own opinions of Lady Enid. The play includes eight characters that are intended to be performed by two actors. The actors play roles of both sexes.

Presented as a play-within-a-play, The Jungle Book uses masks, dance, mime to create this amazing and wonderful adventure.

The play takes place entirely at Jourdain's house in Paris. Jourdain is a middle-aged bourgeois whose father grew rich as a cloth-merchant. The rather foolish Jourdain now has one aim in life—to rise above this middle-class background and be accepted as an aristocratic gentleman. me Jourdain, his sensible wife, sees that he is making himself ridiculous and urges him to return to his previous unpretentious middle-class life, but to no avail. Jourdain wants his daughter Lucille to marry a nobleman. But Lucille is in love with the middle-class Cléonte. He, with the assistance of his valet Covielle, disguises himself and presents himself to Jourdain as the son of the Sultan of Turkey. Needless to say, Jourdain is taken in and consents with delight to have his daughter marry foreign royalty. He is even more delighted when the "Turkish prince" informs him that, as father of the bride, he too will be officially ennobled at a special ceremony.
